Northwestern women's basketball matched its program-record eight Academic All-B1G honorees, which was set in the 2014-15 campaign. The team also earned a 3.2 GPA during the University's winter quarter."We are so proud of our team to have eight student-athlete named to the Academic All-Big Ten team," said head coach Joe McKeown. "It shows how much they embrace the challenges that come with playing in one of the toughest conferences in college basketball and attending one of the greatest universities in the country. "
Two Seniors: Maggie Lyon and Christen Johnson earned the maximum of three Academic All-B1G selections in their careers (freshmen cannot be named Academic All-B1G). Juniors Christen Inman and Ashley Deary have also been selected each year they were eligible.
The Wildcats' overall student-athlete GPA was 3.31, which is the highest on record in the department. The average team GPA also was 3.31, second only to the fall quarter mark of 3.32. Winter 2016 marks the 29th-consecutive quarter that Northwestern student-athletes have had a GPA over a 3.00. Individually, 79 percent of student-athletes had GPAs above a 3.00 with 41 perfect 4.0 marks for the quarter.
The NCAA announced earlier this week that 12 Wildcats varsity athletic programs received Public Recognition Awards as part of the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) program for the 2014-15 academic year, including women's basketball. The 'Cats join Rutgers as the two Big Ten representatives among the 36 total women's basketball programs recognized nationwide.
In addition, women's basketball was one of nine Northwestern varsity programs to have earned perfect 1,000 Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in the most recent data released Wednesday by the NCAA.
