EVANSTON, Ill. – Junior forward Nia Coffey was named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division I All-America squad, announced Saturday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis as part of this weekend's 2016 Women's Final Four activities. Coffey earned honorable mention recognition on the team.
Coffey becomes the first Wildcat in program history to earn a WBCA All-America nod.
A co-captain for the Wildcats, Coffey recorded 19 20-plus points performances, including a season-high 31 points in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals against top-seeded Maryland. Coffey scored in double figures in 50-straight games, dating back to Jan. 22, 2015, for the third-best streak in program history and averaged a team-best 20.3 points per game. She led the Big Ten in double-doubles with 18 to tie an NU single-season record and is the only Big Ten player to rank among the league's top five in points (20.3 ppg), rebounds (9.8 ppg) and blocks (2.0 bpg).
The forward captain set a program single-season record with 344 total rebounds on the year. Patricia Babcock, who logged 305 boards during the 1993-94 season, previously held the record.
The Minneapolis, Minnesota, native secured a spot on the All-B1G First Team (Media/Coaches) earlier this year and was named to the Women's Basketball Association (WBCA) All-Region 4 Team for the first time in her career. Last week, Coffey was named an honorable mention All-America selection by the Associated Press to become just the third in program history.
