Wildcats Unable to Mount Comeback, Drop 8-2 Decision Penn State

EVANSTON, Ill. – Willie Bourbon manufactured a pair of runs and seven different Wildcats reached base as Northwestern fell to Penn State, 8-2, at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops Northwestern to 9-26 (2-9 B1G), while it moves Penn State to 21-14 (7-4 B1G).

Dan Kubiuk made his seventh start of the season and went 4.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits.

Sal Biasi (4-4) started for the Nittany Lions and went 6.2 innings, allowing one run on six hits, while striking out six. The righty earned his fourth win of the season.

Bourbon got the #B1GCats' offense started in the bottom of the fifth, roping a ball in to right field and legging out a double. He advanced to third with a passed ball and eventually came around to score on a Ben Dickey ground out.

Bourbon finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Danny Katz, who pitched in the sixth and seventh innings for Northwestern, ended a scoreless sixth with a strikeout, before using three outs to the left side of the infield to get through the seventh. He finished with two innings pitched, allowing three hits and one run.

Justin Yoss pitched a quick eighth inning, with three outs up the middle, before Cooper Weatherbee used a double play and a grounder to escape the ninth, allowing just one run.

Connor Lind and Jack Claeys got on base to try and spark a ninth-inning rally, and Bourbon knocked one in with a drive to left, but the Wildcats would come up short.

Josh Davis and Pete Hofman also made relief appearances.

Mat Jones, Joe Hoscheit and Connor Lind all tallied singles in the contest.

Northwestern and Penn State finish off their series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park.
