2016 Big Ten Championships Brackets
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Jason Tsirtsis continues his run toward third place after the first day of the 2016 Big Ten Championships in Iowa City.
Tsirtsis bounced back from a one-point loss in the quarterfinals to No. 6-ranked Alec Pantaleo of Michigan and won his next two matches to set up a Sunday afternoon bout against Nebraska's No. 3 Jake Sueflohn with a spot in the third place match on the line.
After receiving a bye in the first round at 149 lbs., Tsirtsis dropped a 3-2 decision to Pantaleo on a takedown with just seconds remaining in the match. He proceeded to run through the consolations with wins over Purdue's Alex Griffin and Minnesota's Jake Short, avenging a regular-season loss to the latter to set up the match with Sueflohn.
Jameson Oster won his first round match by a 9-5 decision at 141 lbs. over Maryland's Alfred Bannister to advance to the quarterfinals where he matched up against Michigan State's Javier Gasca III. Gasca used a four-point nearfall in the third period to secure a 7-2 win, and Oster then dropped a tight match in the consolations to Michigan's George Fisher.
Dominick Malone and Mitch Sliga both remain alive for ninth place as products of their respective weight classes receiving the most automatic bids to the NCAA championships. Malone beat Purdue's Luke Welch, 11-1, to earn a spot in the automatic qualifying match. He will wrestle Rossi Bruno of Michigan. Sliga also won a 9-1 major decision over Aaron Calderon and will face Minnesota's Nick Wanzek with a trip to NCAAs on the line.
The 2016 Big Ten Championships continue on Sunday with Session III set to begin at 12 p.m. and the finals, televised live on the Big Ten Network, getting underway at 3 p.m. from Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
