Coffey Leads 'Cats to Thrilling Upset over Fourth-Seeded Indiana

3/4/2016 4:12:00 PM | Women's Basketball

INDIANAPOLIS – For the second-straight game, juniors Nia Coffey and Ashley Deary recorded double-doubles to lead the Wildcats to a thrilling upset over fourth-seeded Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals.

With the win Northwestern advances to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament for the second-consecutive season where they will take on Maryland.

Coffey led all scorers with 26 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks, while Deary contributed 14 points, 11 assists and four steals. Inman joined the duo with 18 points, and Allie Tuttle and freshman Jordan Hankins combined for 15 points.

Coffey scored 19 of Northwestern's 35 first half and improved on her single season school record with 330 rebounds for the season.

Amanda Cahill led a trio of Hoosiers in double figures with 23 points. Tyra Buss and Alexis Glassion contributed 16 and 11, respectively.

The Wildcats opened scoring with a quick 4-0, but Indiana would not let the NU get away. The Hoosiers leveled the score, 6-6, halfway through the first quarter before a Cahill triple gave IU its first lead of the game. Coffey drained a bucket a drew a foul to convert the three-point play to tie it up and Hankins drilled a 3-pointer in the final seconds as the Wildcats led 21-18 after 10 minutes of play.

The second quarter saw six lead changes as the teams entered the halftime break, 35-35.

An Indiana free throw gave the Hoosiers the lead early in the third quarter, but Coffey laid down a 3-pointer to give the Wildcats a lead they would never relinquish. Indiana came within one on two occasions in the middle of the period, but Hankins used a 5-0 run of her own to push an eight-point lead.

The Hoosiers would not come within four for the remainder of the game, and the #B1GCats hung on for their third-straight win in just as many days.

For the game, Northwestern shot 46 percent (32-69) from the field, 33 percent (5-15) from 3-point range and 67 percent (10-15) from the charity stripe. Indiana connected on 39 percent (27-69) of its shots, 30 percent (6-20) from beyond the arc and 62 percent (13-21) from the free-throw line.

The Wildcats will tip off against Maryland at 2 p.m. CST. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
