Northwestern Falls to Michigan in Overtime Thriller

3/10/2016 2:15:00 PM | Men's Basketball

INDIANAPOLIS —  With time running off the clock in regulation, Alex Olah got into the paint and put back a missed shot to tie the game at 60-60 and force overtime with Michigan, but the Wolverines would go on to win 72-70 to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 2016 Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament.

Northwestern (20-12) was led by Tre Demps' 21 points, while Olah chipped in 20 points and Bryant McIntosh finished with 19. Michigan (21-11) also had three players score in double figures with Duncan Robinson leading the way with 21 points.

The overtime contest was the fifth of the season for the Wildcats, which is a school record.

Northwestern finished the game shooting 37-percent (25-of-58) from the floor and 41-percent (11-of-27) from behind the arc.

Michigan got out of the gates fast, jumping out a 23-11 lead in the opening nine minutes of the first half, but a 10-0 run by the Wildcats made it a one score game, 23-21, with just under eight minutes to play.

The Wolverines picked up the pressure on the defensive end to close the half, limiting Northwestern to 1-of -13 from the field to head into the locker room up, 34-25.

McIntosh and Demps led Northwestern with nine points each in the first half. All nine of Demps' points came from 3-point field goals. He finished the game 5-of-11 from behind the arc.

Olah got the Wildcats going in the second half by scoring six straight points and Demps hit a 3-pointer to send Northwestern on a nine-point run and bring the 'Cats within a basket, 37-34.

Olah finished the game with 13 rebounds to go along with his 20 points. It was the senior center's fourth double-double of the season and 12th of his career.

Northwestern would stay within striking distance of Michigan for the remainder of the half until the 'Cats forced a turnover and came down to find Olah in the post, who used a spin move to get to the rim and tie the game at 52-52 with 5:49 to play.

After the game's final media timeout, McIntosh gave Northwestern its first lead, 55-54, of the second half when he hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key.

Michigan would go on to take a four-point lead, but Olah's 3-point field goal with 17 seconds remaining made it a one-score game, 59-58.

Robinson hit the front-end of a pair of free throws that would eventually lead to Olah's game-tying put back.

The Wolverines climbed out to a four-point lead in overtime, but five consecutive points from Demps gave Northwestern a 68-67 lead with 1:33 on the clock. Nathan Taphorn knocked down a pair of free throws to put Northwestern ahead, 70-67, but Robinson would tie the game on the next possession with a 3-pointer.

Zak Irvin hit the game-winning shot with two seconds on the clock to give Michigan the victory.
