Getting to Know: Maggie Lyon

As the careers for the Northwestern women's basketball seniors come to an end, NUSports.com sat down with each senior to reflect on her time as a student-athlete. In this first edition, NUSports spoke with co-captain Maggie Lyon.

Favorite Northwestern Memory: My favorite memory at NU is making the NCAA tournament in 2015. It was amazing for me and my teammates to share with everyone who had supported us: our coaches, everyone in the athletic department, and the whole NU community.

Favorite Game Memory: Our double overtime win against Depaul in 2014 was one of my favorite game memories. It was such a fun, fast-paced game and to be able to finish out the double overtime against an in-state rival was awesome.

What legacy do you want leave at Northwestern: I hope to be remembered more for my character than my athletic ability. I hope people knew how much I cared about Northwestern as a place and how much I want it to succeed in the future. It will always hold such a special place in my heart.

If you could do your college career all over again, would you change anything?: I don't think I would change anything because everything that happened led to an imperfect perfection. There are obviously things I wish could have gone different ways but those difficult times made me more resilient.

What is one thing you wish you could have told your freshman self?: I'd tell myself the same thing everyone before me told me: it goes by fast!

What was the biggest surprise of your four-year career at Northwestern?:  I think the biggest surprise I had at Northwestern was a pleasant one. It was being able to interact and get to know all of the people in and around the athletic department and university and learning how much they really cared about us as student athletes and people.

What are your plans after college? I am hoping to play professional basketball after I graduate!

How have your experiences at Northwestern shaped you as a person and an athlete?
I think my experience at Northwestern has taught me to appreciate every little thing in life. I have learned that even on my bad days, I can always remember the many blessings I have in my life such as being able to travel all over the world/country because of basketball, study at a world class institution, and have people like my coaches, family, and friends who care so much about me.
