Kim, Lau Lead 'Cats To Top Spot After Day 1 At Stanford Intercollegiate

STANFORD, Calif. – Junior Hannah Kim and sophomore Stephanie Lau are both inside the Top-5 after 18 holes, leading No. 17 Northwestern to the top of the leaderboard following Round 1 at the Stanford Intercollegiate.

Kim's position near the top of the leaderboard is ever more impressive when considering she opened the competition with back-to-back bogeys on No. 1 and No. 2 at Stanford Golf Course. The two-time Big Ten Player of the Year then carded four straight pars before birdieing give of her final 12 holes of the day on Friday to finish the round with a 2-under 69.
 
Lau was also over par after two holes on Friday thanks to a bogey on the 423-yard, Par-4 No. 2, but she battled back with three birdies and 12 pars over her last 16 holes in Round 1 to wrap up the first day of competition with a 1-under 70.
 
All five Wildcats competing this weekend in northern California finished the opening round inside the Top-26, guiding Northwestern to the top spot on the leaderboard after one day.
 
The 'Cats will tee off Saturday's second round at 10 a.m. PT, paired with second-place UCLA and third-place Arizona State.

The 54-hole event is hosted by Dr. Condoleezza Rice, the Thomas and Barbara Stephenson Senior Fellow on Public Policy at Stanford's Hoover Institution. Dr. Rice served as U.S. Secretary of State from 2005-09 and is an avid golfer.
 
Kim, the two-time Big Ten Player of the Year, was the Wildcats top finisher at Stanford last fall, finishing in a tie for fourth place with a 2-under 211 over three days. The Chula Vista, California, native was one of only six players in the 90-person field to finish under par after 54 holes. Lau, last year's Conference Freshman of the Year, tied for 11th to secure a fourth consecutive Top-15 finish to open her college career. The duo helped Northwestern for a fourth-place result on the team leaderboard.
 
Based on the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, the 17-team field includes five of the nation's Top-7 teams, and eight of the Top-25. The leaderboard will feature No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 USC, No. 5 UCLA, No. 6 Georgia, No. 7 Florida, No. 17 Northwestern, No. 18 Oklahoma State, No. 24 Arizona State, No. 27 San Jose State, No. 33 San Diego State, No. 37 Colorado, No. 41 Cal, No. 46 Pepperdine, Iowa State, UC Davis, USF and Washington.
 
Bronte Law of UCLA is the two-time defending individual champion. Other top individuals include No. 1 Esther Lee of Colorado, No. 2 Andrea Lee of Stanford, No. 6 Lilia Vu of UCLA and No. 8 Bailey Tardy of Georgia. Last year, Stanford earned a seven-stroke team triumph by improving every day.
