Assistant Coach Audrey Huth Coaches Corner

Coaches Corner: Audrey Huth

1/28/2016 12:00:00 PM | Women's Cross Country & Track

Audrey Huth's Northwestern career began in 2009 as a Wildcats student-athlete. During a four-year career the Shelby, Michigan, native broke cross country program records and earned both All-Big Ten and All-Midwest Region distinctions, compiling a resume that stands as one of the most decorated in school history. Following a graduate season running track at Duke University, Huth returned to Evanston in July of 2014 as cross country's assistant coach, first with the since-retired April Likhite and now with head coach 'AHavahla Haynes, both of whom mentored her as a student-athlete.

As Wildcats cross country kicks off its track schedule this month, NUSports.com sat down with Huth for this week's edition of "Coaches Corner."

NUSports.com: When did you fall in love with running?
Audrey Huth: That's a really tough question. Running has always been a bit of a love hate relationship for me. Although then I would never have admitted it, I would have to say during my junior year of high school.

What is your favorite memory from your Northwestern athletic career?
It is SO hard to possibly pick a favorite memory from my NU career. I am fortunate to have had such incredible teammates, coaches, and support staff in the department that I have so many wonderful memories with each of them. A couple that stand out are:
  1. Qualifying for the NACAC my freshman year and receiving the Team USA gear after practice. A bunch of my teammates and I ripped open the box and just had a blast trying on all of the pieces. It really felt like something special for all of us.
  2. Finding out that I qualified for the NCAA Cross Country National Championships as an individual my sophomore year and dancing around the apartment with my teammates to celebrate.
  3. Placing onto the All-Big Ten team my junior year.
  4. Even though my senior year was not at all what I wanted performance-wise individually, having our highest finish in the Region and the Big Ten in many years was pretty exciting.
  5. Countless memories with my teammates, coaches and fellow student athletes at NU. Really, these individuals are what made my experience so special.

Which coaches in your career have had the biggest impact on you? How?
I have had absolutely incredible coaches my entire life who have all had big impacts on me. I really cannot imagine my life without any of them. Shout out to D, Fast Bob, Hav, Trish, Kevin, Will, April, and my Dad.

At what point did you decide you wanted to coach?
In college.

How would you describe head coach 'Ahavahla Haynes?
Hav is SO fierce! She really cares about each student athlete as a person, their relationship with running and their goals. She's pretty intense and makes sure we are doing things right to constantly be progressing. She also has a cat, often breaks out in spontaneous dance moves, and is very funny.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Helping student athletes go after their goals. Being able to give individuals the opportunities that NU athletics offers and to see how life changing this experience can be is amazing.

What is the most challenging part of your job?
The relationships in my life mean the world to me and our schedules are pretty demanding so the lifestyle can be tough. It's been challenging to not see my friends and family as often as I would like.

Are there things you do or say as a coach that you recognize as things you picked up from your own coaches?
Absolutely! Which can be pretty hilarious.

What is your favorite thing about Evanston?
The beaches and restaurants, for sure!

Favorite thing about Chicago?
The Chicago skyline when you hit certain spots on the lakefront path, PURE JOY.

Favorite thing about Northwestern?
The people here are unlike anywhere else. NU is such a special place. I always bleed purple.
