'Cats win five singles matches, all three doubles matchups
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's women's tennis team posted a solid showing in its return to action at the Wildcat Duals Friday at Combe Tennis Center. Squaring off against opponents from Alabama, the preseason 26th-ranked Wildcats won five of six singles matches and all three doubles matches against the 15th-ranked Crimson Tide.
The 'Cats set the tone for the afternoon in doubles competion. The teams participated in the new scoring system where each game is played to six points with no advantage and the first team to win six games winning the match. Northwestern was led by the seventh-ranked team of Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp who cruised to a 6-1 victory over the team of Erin Routliffe and Dani Spielmann. The Wildcats also got convincing wins from the team of Erin Larner and Alicia Barnett who posted a 6-3 triumph and the pairing of Manon Peri and Brooke Rischbieth who won 6-2.
Northwestern carried the momentum into singles play where four of the five matches they won were in straight sets. Returning from injury in the fall, Barnett had no trouble with Nati Maynetto, earning a 6-2, 6-0 win. Freshman Lee Or was also dominant, winning 6-2, 6-3 over Joanna Nena Savva 6-2, 6-3. Also earning straight-set victories were Jillian Rooney who defeated Bennett Dunn 7-6, 6-1 and Alex Chatt who topped Spielmann 6-2, 7-5.
In the lone match of the day to go three sets, 61st-ranked Maddie Lipp outlasted No. 41 Andie Daniell 7-6, 5-7, 6-2.
The Wildcats continue action at the Wildcat Duals at 11 a.m. Saturday when they face opponents from TCU.
