EVANSTON, Ill. —Northwestern cross country today announced their 2016 indoor and outdoor track schedules, featuring five events in Illinois.
"Our young women are eager to get back into competition," said Wildcats head coach 'A Havahla Haynes. "We made great strides during the fall cross country season, and the team has worked diligently throughout the winter. Combined with the return of several top runners from injury, we have high expectations for the track season and cannot wait to get started next weekend in Champaign."
The 'Cats kick off their 2016 schedule on Saturday, Jan. 16, with their first indoor meet — the Illini Classic in Champaign, Illinois. They continue with a split-squad day competing at both the Meyo Invitational (South Bend, Ind.) and Windy City Invitational (Chicago, Ill.) scheduled for Feb. 6.
Later in the month, the #B1GCats return to Champaign for the Orange & Blue Invitational on Feb. 20. On the same day, a portion of the squad will head to South Bend, Indiana, for the Alex Wilson Invitational.
After competition in January and February, the NCAA Indoor Championships are held on March 11 and 12 at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Alabama, hosted by Samford University.
Beginning the outdoor track campaign, the Wildcats travel west to San Francisco to run in the San Francisco Distance Carnival on April 2. Later that month, Northwestern competes in a two-day Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville (April 22 and 23).
NU makes their third trip to Champaign on April 23, for the Illini Twilight. After that, the 'Cats will return to the Golden State for the Payton Jordan Invitational in Palo Alto, California, on May 1.
Northwestern wraps up its regular season outdoor track slate in nearby Naperville, Illinois, with the two-day Dr. Keeler Invitational (May 12 and 13).
The NCAA Regional in Lawrence, Kansas, will take place on May 26-28, and the NCAA Outdoor Championship is scheduled for June 8-11 in Eugene, Oregon, at Hayward Field.
During the 2015 cross country slate, the Wildcats were led by senior Elena Barham and junior Jena Pianin. Barham was in the top two times for the 4K, 5K and 6K events for NU, capping off her season with a top finish for the 'Cats at the Big Ten Championships. Pianin was best on the team with a 15:29.2 time in the 4K distance.
