MADISON, Wis. -- Junior Jena Pianin finished the 4-kilometer Zimmer Championship Course in 15:29.2 to secure a ninth-place finish at the Badger Season Opener on Friday night. Pianin's Top-10 result paced the Wildcats in their first event of the season, the first under new head coach 'AHavahla Haynes.
2015 Badger Season Opener - FINAL RESULTS
Northwestern placed three runners in the Top-16, and five in the Top-25 in Madison on Friday. Senior Elena Barham finished 12th in 15:48.7, while classmate Rachel Weathered was 16th in 15:54.7. The cumulative finishes resulted in a third-place finish for the Wildcats overall in the meet behind host Wisconsin and Loyola (Ill.).
"The weather was hot and humid, so the pace and race plan had to be adjusted.," said Haynes following her head coaching debut. "The team goal was to get two separate groups through 2K together and then drop the pace over the second 2K. Jena Pianin and Elena Barham set the rhythm and followed through with the team plan, they led Rachel Weathered and Camille Blackman through to be our 3rd and 4th finishers. It was a good opener where we practiced patience and pacing early on."
This meet was the first of six for the Wildcats during the fall cross-country season. Northwestern will have a week off until their next matchup on Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Midwest Open hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
