Pianin Paces Northwestern At 30th Annual Roy Griak Invitational

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. -- Junior Jena Pianin led Northwestern Saturday at the 30th Annual Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota. The Pleasanton, California native finished the event in 23:18.17 to lead a 10-woman contingent from Evanston in the Twin Cities.

Pianin, an All-Region performer a year ago, has paced Northwestern both weekends she has competed this season. She also turned in the 'Cats top time at the Badger Season Opener on Sept. 4. The junior had two teammates on her heels as she crossed the finish line with both Elena Barham (23:20.04) and Rachel Weathered (23:25.5) within eight seconds. Northwestern also got strong performances from a pair of newcomers as rookies Hannah Anderson (23:59.6) and Mary Orders (24:22.5) had scoring times for the Wildcats.

The University of Minnesota hosted the 2015 Roy Griak Invitational as part of homecoming festivities at Les Bolstad Golf Course. One of the largest meets in the country, the Griak includes six collegiate races and four high school races. The Wildcats women's cross country team took part in the Jack Johnson Women's Division I Gold Competition.

The Jack Johnson Women's Gold Race featured runners from 26 teams on a six-kilometer course. Boise State earned the victory, edging 2014 Griak team champion, Big Ten champion, and NCAA champion Michigan State.
