Chatt, Lipp advance to semifinals of Purple draw

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Redshirt sophomore Maddie Lipp and sophomore Alex Chatt both advanced to the semifinal round of the Purple draw, highlighting Northwestern's action on the second day of the Wildcat Invite on Saturday.
Lipp and Chatt both needed three sets to advance in the winners' bracket. Lipp defeated Amber Washington of Pittsburgh 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 while Chatt rallied back after dropping her first set to defeat Anna Vladutu of DePaul 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. Also in the Purple draw, freshman Lee Or was defeated by Marina Cozac of DePaul 6-3, 6-0.
In the White draw, junior Jillian Rooney started her day with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory over Natsumi Okamoto of Pittsburgh before suffering a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Abby Owens of LSU.
Lipp and Chatt teamed up to have success in doubles action as well. The pairing rolled to a pair of 6-1 wins over Audrey Ann Blakely and Gabriela Rezende of Pittsburgh and Cozac and Milica Tesic of DePaul to reach the semifinals. The Northwestern team of Or and Erin Larner were victorious in their lone match of the day, defeating the LSU duo of Ryann Foster and Skylar Holloway 6-3. The Wildcats' duo of Rooney and Brooke Rischbieth came up a little short against Michigan State's Lexi Baylis and Erin Faulkner, falling 7-5.
The final day of competition at the Wildcat Invite gets underway at 9 a.m. Sunday with doubles play.
