The University of Minnesota is hosting the 30th annual running of the Roy Griak Invitational as part of homecoming festivities at Les Bolstad Golf Course on Saturday. One of the largest meets in the country, the Griak includes six collegiate races and four high school races. The Wildcats women's cross country team will race in the Jack Johnson Women's Division I Gold Competition at 1:20 p.m. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
For head coach 'AHavahla Haynes, the Griak is an opportunity for Northwestern to test itself against the most competitive field they've seen thus far in 2015.
"We are racing the ten women that have been most consistent in training over the last month," said Haynes. "This is the first time where the women truly get to race and make the most of a competitive field, we will go up against some of the best teams from across the country. Women who run well at Griak tend to do very well in the championship portion of the season. The women's job this weekend is to make every place matter and beat competitors at the line."
"Jena Pianin, Rachel Weathered and Elena Barham have come a long way in five weeks, trusted the training and are expected to be our leaders. Joining them on the starting line Saturday will be Hannah Anderson, Camille Blackman, Allison Jacobsen, Megan O'Brien, Mary Orders, Brooke Pigneri and Ellen Schmitz."
The Jack Johnson Women's Gold Race features runners from 26 teams battling for the top spot in the six-kilometer race. Sixteen teams return from the Griak field a year ago, including 2014 Griak team champion, Big Ten champion, and NCAA champion Michigan State. Four teams that competed in the 2014 NCAA Championships and two conference champions will also be there. Four of the top seven teams from the 2014 Griak return to the 2015 field in Michigan State (first), Boise State (fourth), Baylor (fifth) and host Minnesota (seventh).
For the first time in more than half a century, the University of Minnesota men's cross country team will head into competition without Roy Griak on its coaching staff. The legendary coach passed away in July after dedicating his life to the University of Minnesota and the sports of cross country and track & field. A Minnesota alum, Griak spent more than 50 years on the Gophers coaching staff including 33 as head coach of the men's track & field and cross country programs.
UP NEXT: The Wildcats will run at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend on Friday, Oct. 2.
