Northwestern Opens Fall Slate by Hosting Wildcat Invite

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's women's tennis team opens up its fall season this weekend as it hosts the Wildcat Invite at Vandy Christie Tennis Center. Action gets underway at 9:30 a.m. Friday and continues through Sunday. Admission is free.
NU welcomes individuals from eight other schools to Evanston, including UIC, DePaul, LSU, Michigan State, Ball State, Drake, Pittsburgh and Eastern Michigan.
Eight individuals return from last year's Northwestern team that posted a 16-8 mark in dual match play, including a 9-2 record against Big Ten foes. Alicia Barnett, the lone senior on the team's roster and an All-Big Ten performer each of the last two seasons, headlines the list of returners.
The Wildcats were well-represented when the ITA preseason rankings were released. Redshirt sophomore Maddie Lipp headlines NU in the singles rankings as she is No. 110 after earning a runner-up finish at the ITA Summer Nationals in August. Erin Larner, the 2015 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, is ranked No. 122 and Barnett is the third Northwestern singles player ranked, coming in at No. 124.
The 'Cats also have two doubles teams ranked. After competing as Northwestern's top duo a year ago, Barnett and Larner lead the way at No. 18. Lipp and Alex Chatt, who teamed up to win the doubles title at the ITA Summer Nationals, have earned a preseason ranking of No. 34.
