'Cats In Second After 36 Holes At Dick McGuire Invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Northwestern is lurking in second place after posting back-to-back round of 3-under 289 in the first two rounds of the season-opening Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire Invitational on Monday. The Wildcats, defending champions in the event, are 12 shots back of tournament leader Stanford heading into Tuesday's final round.
Sophomore Sarah Cho, competing as an individual, is the top 'Cat on the leaderboard after 36 holes. The San Diego native is tied for sixth after carding six birdies in firing a 5-under 68 during the morning, and backing that up with a 1-over 74 in the afternoon to finish Day 1 at four-under-par. Cho won the 2015 Big Ten Individual Championship last May, also competing as an individual.

Classmate Hannah Kim is right on Cho's heels, tied for eighth at 3-under-par. The reigning Big Ten Player of the Year recorded five birdies on the back-nine in Round 1 on her way to a 3-under 70, and followed with an even-par 73 over the second 18 holes of the day. Kim and Cho are tied for second among all players in the field with nine birdies through two rounds of play.
A Wildcats veteran and a rookie teammate are tied for 14th at 1-under-par after 36 holes. Senior Suchaya Tangkamolprasert was 1-over in the morning but 2-under during the afternoon, while Stephanie Lau fired an even-par 73 in her first collegiate round and then birdied two of her final five holes in the afternoon to finish at 1-under for the round and for the day. Senior Kaitlin Park registered back-to-back 73's and is tied for 23rd at even-par, while junior Kacie Komoto is at 3-over par and among the Top-10 players in the field with a team-best 26 pars through 36 holes.
The Wildcats, No. 12 in the Golfweek preseason rankings, are defending their 2014 Dick McGuire Invitational championship against a field that features eight other programs ranked among the Top-30, including defending NCAA champion Stanford. The full field also includes No. 22 UC Davis, Cal State Fullerton, Denver, Gonzaga, Iowa State, Miami, No. 29 UNLV, New Mexico, No. 21 Ohio State, No. 9 Oklahoma State, No. 19 Oregon, Oregon State, No. 18 Pepperdine, No. 25 San Diego State, UTEP and Washington State.
The tournament's final 18 holes will tee off at 9 a.m. CT/8 a.m. MT on Tuesday.
