Wildcats Race To Top-3 Finish At 36th Annual Midwest Open

KENOSHA, Wis. -- Led by freshman Hannah Anderson Northwestern placed four runners in the Top-25 of the 36th Annual Midwest Open and seven in the Top-30 to secure a third-place finish at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Anderson, a rookie from Rumson, N.J., finished the 5,000m course in 18:56.2 to earn 13th-place individually.

Ellen Schmitz crossed the line just after Anderson (18:59.2) to take 15th place, while Mary Orders, Sarah Coffey and Megan Beach rounded out the Wildcats Top-5.

With seven Northwestern runners on the sidelines, a number of Wildcats were afforded the opportunity to step up their pace and presence on Saturday in southeast Wisconsin. The 'Cats top seven finishers from last weekend's Badger Season Opener took this weekend off from competition. Junior Jena Pianin's ninth-place overall finish led Northwestern to a third-place result as a team. "Being in charge of your pace is incredibly important amidst the chaos in cross country races," said head coach 'AHavahla Haynes. "The top seven from last week did a good job of navigating the chaos."

The Wildcats will be off from competition next week in preparation for the Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota, on Sept. 26.
