2015-16 Northwestern Wrestling Schedule

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern will wrestle one of the most competitive schedules in the nation in 2015-16 with the 53rd Ken Kraft Midlands Championships and five home duals highlighting the slate that was released Wednesday.

"Our schedule is always one of the best and most difficult in the country," Northwestern head coach Drew Pariano said. "We always look for duals and tournaments that will help us prepare for the Big Ten and NCAA championships in March. We will have the opportunity to prove ourselves against some of the Big Ten's best programs this year, with many of them coming to Evanston."

Northwestern fans will have the opportunity to see the Wildcats go up against defending national champion Ohio State on Friday, Dec. 18 with the national runner-up Iowa Hawkeyes visiting Welsh-Ryan on Sunday, Jan. 10. Northwestern hosts Penn State on Sunday, Jan. 17 and wraps up the Big Ten home slate with Minnesota on Friday, Feb. 5.

The Wildcats hit the road for five conference duals, beginning with a road trip through Michigan in late January. NU heads to Ann Arbor on Friday, Jan. 29 to take on the Wolverines and wrestles Michigan State on Sunday, Jan. 31. Northwestern travels downstate to face rival Illinois Sunday, Feb. 7 and then heads west for a showdown with Nebraska on Friday, Feb. 12. The Big Ten regular season wraps up with a dual against Wisconsin Sunday, Feb. 21.

Three tournaments, including the 53rd Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, will help Northwestern prepare for March. The Wildcats are once again participating in the annual Keystone Classic on Sunday, Nov. 22. New to the schedule this season is the Grapple at the Garden in New York City on Sunday, Nov. 29. Some of the nation's best teams will square off in one of America's most iconic venues, Madison Square Garden, which also plays host to the NCAA championships this season.

"Getting out to New York City in November for Grapple at the Garden is important because it will help our guys acclimate to the environment at Madison Square Garden before they go back for the NCAA Championships," Pariano said.

The Midlands, one of wrestling's most prestigious events, will take place Tuesday, Dec. 29 and Wednesday, Dec. 30 inside Welsh-Ryan Arena with more than 40 teams expected to participate.

The NWCA All-Star Classic on Sunday, Nov. 1 in Atlanta, Ga. will kick off the season with the best wrestlers in the country going head to head. Northwestern has been represented in the event four straight years, and Jason Tsirtsis and Mike McMullan represented the Wildcats with wins a season ago.

There are several nonconference duals on tap during the 2015-16 season. Northwestern travels to Ypsilanti, Mich. on Saturday, Nov. 7 for the Eastern Michigan Duals. The Wildcats will wrestle at Princeton and at Rider on Saturday, Dec. 5 before heading to Edwardsville, Ill. for a dual meet with SIU-Edwardsville on Sunday, Dec. 13. The final home dual of the season will take place Friday, Feb. 19 when the Duke Blue Devils come to Evanston for a break in Big Ten action.

The Big Ten championships are scheduled for March 5-6 in Iowa City, Iowa while the NCAA championships will take place March 17-19 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
