Northwestern duo outlasts team from USC in final
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Northwestern redshirt sophomore-to-be Maddie Lipp and rising sophomore Alex Chatt outlasted a team from USC to claim the doubles championship at the ITA/USTA National Summer Championships on Tuesday.
The top-seeded Wildcats' duo squeaked past the Trojans' third-seeded team of Zoe Katz and Madison Wesby in the title match. The matchup came down to a tiebreaker with the NU duo pulling away to take the contest, 9-8 (2).
Lipp was nearly a double-winner as she also advanced to the championship match in singles before being defeated by Florida's top-seeded Brooke Austin 6-3, 6-1. Lipp was a 9-16 seed in the singles draw but won five matches to reach the title tilt. She managed to knock off second-seeded Hannah King of Georgia in the quarterfinal round before dropping King's teammate, fifth-seeded Mariana Gould in the semifinals. Earlier this summer, Lipp had claimed an ITA Summer Circuit event in Minneapolis.
Chatt also competed in the championship draw as the No. 6 seed. She managed to earned three straight-set victories before falling to eventual champion Austin in the quarterfinals.
The ITA Summer Circuit has been in existance since 1993. The circuit provides college as well as junior and alumni players the opportunity to compete in organized events virtually year round. Although the primary focus of the circuit is to provide incoming freshmen and collegiate players the chance to compete in the summer months, for NCAA compliance purposes, the events within the ITA Summer Circuit are categorized as "open"; therefore anyone is eligible to compete in these events as long as he/she is a current ITA member.
