Men's Soccer Announces Full 2015 Schedule

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern men's soccer head coach Tim Lenahan announced his program's complete 2015 schedule Tuesday, one that features eight contests against 2014 NCAA Tournament teams and six games at Toyota Park.
"While we are excited about the new Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium Complex being built at Northwestern, it means this year we will be playing away from the our on-campus confines," said Lenahan. "I want to thank the City of Bridgeview for working with us to make Toyota Park available for six games and UIC for allowing us to play two games at Flames Field. With another challenging Big Ten and non-conference schedule, we are hoping to attract some new fans from the city of Chicago and the south suburbs to see some great soccer at those two great venues. This is just another great example of how Northwestern is Chicago's Big Ten Team."
Northwestern begins its competition with three exhibition matches, including a trip to Des Moines, Iowa on August 19 to take on Drake before a matchup against 2014 NCAA Qualifier Creighton in Omaha on August 22. The Blue Jays were one win away from advancing to the semifinals last season and finished the season ranked No. 7 in the final NSCAA poll with a mark of 16-3-3.
The Wildcats begin their 36th regular season, and 15th under Lenahan, when they host Colgate at UIC's Flames Field on August 29. The 'Cats and Raiders will be meeting for just the second time in program history and the first time since a 3-0 NU win to open the 2007 season.
After August, NU opens the month of September out West at Gonzaga for a neutral-site contest against Seattle on September 3 before battling the Zags two days later on September 5. The 'Cats are 1-0 all-time against Gonzaga and will be meeting the Redhawks for the first time in program history.
A challenging Big Ten slate starts early when Northwestern opens conference play in the first of six games at Toyota Park, home of Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire, against Ohio State on September 11. Last season Northwestern was one of six teams to earn berths in the NCAA Tournament and the 'Cats will play each of the other five in 2015.
The Buckeyes topped the 'Cats in the conference opener in Columbus last season, 2-0, and went on to finish the season with a 9-8-5 record while advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Wildcats continue play at Toyota Park against Central Florida on September 14 before hitting the road for a pair of contests against Big Ten foe Michigan (Sept. 20) and Chicago rival UIC (Sept. 23).
Another tough conference matchup against NCAA Tournament qualifier Indiana is on tap in a Northwestern Soccer doubleheader at Toyota Park on September 27. The women's program will host Rutgers at noon before the men take on the Hoosiers at 3 p.m. The 'Cats and Hoosiers met twice last season, both ending in 1-1 double-overtime draws.
After opening the month of October at reigning Big Ten regular season and tournament champion Maryland on Oct. 2, the 'Cats will return to the greater Chicago area for the remainder of the month. The Wildcats handed the Terrapins one of its only two losses in conference play last season in the first-ever meeting between the two teams, 3-2 in overtime.
After traveling to Maryland, the 'Cats will take on Chicago-rival DePaul (Oct. 7) before hosting a NCAA Tournament rematch against SIUE at UIC's Flame Field on Oct. 10. The Purple and White will then play three-straight games at Toyota Park against Rutgers (Oct. 16), Notre Dame (Oct. 20) and Michigan State (Oct. 24).
The Fighting Irish advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament last season and finished No. 9 in the final NSCAA rankings, while the Spartans were ranked No. 8 in the final poll after advancing to the quarterfinals.
The 'Cats will close the month with another local matchup when they take the short 5-mile trek down Ridge Avenue to battle Loyola on October 28.
Northwestern will close the regular season with a pair of Big Ten games on the road at Penn State (Nov. 1) and Wisconsin (Nov. 4) as the 'Cats will be looking to secure their third regular-season conference championship.
Penn State was one of the six Big Ten teams to qualify for the NCAA Tournament last season, but was handed a loss by the 'Cats in Evanston, 2-1 in double overtime.
The 2011 Big Ten Tournament champions will look to take home more conference hardware at the Big Ten Tournament from November 8 to 15.
Chicago's Big Ten team is coming off its ninth appearance in the NCAA Tournament over the past 11 seasons. With returning All-Big Ten Selections Joey Calistri and Cole Missimo, as well as 2014 Big Ten All-Freshman Team Selections Sam Forsgren and Elo Ozumba, the Wildcats will seek their 13th-consecutive winning season in 2015.
