Portland Tosses Career-High Nine Strikeouts in 3-2 Win Over Maryland

5/15/2015 10:51:00 AM | Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. - Junior Matt Portland struck out a career-high nine batters in seven innings as Northwestern claimed its second-consecutive win over Maryland, 3-2, on Friday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park.

The southpaw earned the win for NU after allowing just two runs on four hits. Junior Jake Stolley entered the game in relief and pitched two scoreless frames, while fanning four for his seventh save this spring.

Maryland starter Brian Shaffer retired the first seven Wildcats, but freshman JR Reimer broke the cycle when he launched a single to second base in the bottom of the third. Reimer was sent home with an RBI single from junior Zach Jones as NU struck first with a 1-0 lead.

The Terrapins responded aggressively in the following inning. Maryland forced a pair of walks before junior Anthony Papio doubled to right field to plate UMD's first run of the game and eventually took the lead after crossing the go-ahead run on a throwing error from Reimer.

The lead would not hold for the Big Ten newcomer as the Wildcats found the equalizer in the bottom of the sixth. Fifth-year senior Scott Heelan, who reached with a single up the middle, scored the tying run on a base hit from sophomore Matt Hopfner before classmate Joe Hoscheit crossed the game-winning run, courtesy of a single from fifth-year senior Cody Stevens.

Chicago's Big Ten Team will look for the series sweep Saturday, May 16, at 1 p.m. Join the Wildcats at Rocky Miller Park as they honor their 10 seniors in a post-game Senior Day celebration. Fans in attendance will receive an official Northwestern baseball t-shirt.
