Manhattan, Ill., native taken in round 24 by hometown team

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior Brandon Magallones was chosen by the Chicago White Sox in the 24th round of the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday. The right-hander was the second member of Chicago's Big Ten Team taken this year, joining fellow hurler Matt Portland (Kansas City).

"I feel very fortunate to be drafted today and given the chance to follow my dream," said Magallones. "I'm extremely grateful to the Chicago White Sox. They are my hometown team and my family's favorite team, as well, which makes this feeling even sweeter."

Magallones made 16 starts on the hill in 2015, and 52 total during his four-year career. The Manhattan, Ill., native tossed 84.1 innings during his final season while registering a team-high four wins. During his tenure in Evanston, he won 20 times in 58 appearances.

The pitcher made six quality starts during his senior season. He saved one of his best outings for last when he stifled the Maryland Terrapins during his last start in a Northwestern uniform. He limited the Terps, a team that went on to the NCAA Super Regionals, to only two hits in a complete-game shutout, the first of his career. He struck out seven and walked just one en route to his fourth career Big Ten Pitcher of the Week award. The one batter he walked was promptly picked off first base.

Magallones has a penchant for punching out batters during his NU career. The righty recorded 226 strikeouts between 2012-2014, ranking him seventh all-time in program history.

When his name was called Wednesday, Magallones became the 67th student-athlete who played under Paul Stevens to be drafted by, or sign a contract with, a professional Major League Baseball organization. At least one Wildcat has been taken in 17 of the last 18 MLB Drafts, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2015.
