Jake Herbert and Stevan Micic swept the World Team Trials in Madison, Wis. over the weekend

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Former Northwestern standout Jake Herbert will wrestle at the Senior World Championships in Las Vegas after he advanced through the U.S. World Team Trials over the weekend in Madison, Wis.

Herbert swept former Penn State wrestler Ed Ruth in a pair of matches in the Senior World Team Trials. Herbert dominated Ruth for a 13-3 tech fall in the first match before winning a 10-2 decision at 189 lbs. to secure a spot at the championships.

"Halfway through the 2013 summer when I was watching the World Team Championships, I said, `Hey, I only have this short window to achieve my dream.' The window is only open so long to get a gold medal," Herbert said.

The 2012 Olympian and 2009 World silver medalist will take aim at another Olympic berth at the World Championships in September.

Herbert won two national championships and was a three-time Big Ten champion during his time in Evanston. He left Northwestern as the school's all-time leader in winning percentage and finished fourth in career wins when he graduated in 2009. He is one of three Wildcats (Mike Funk, Mike McMullan) to earn All-America honors four times.
