EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern was recognized as one of the top academic wrestling programs in the country by the National Wrestling Coaches Association in its annual All-Academic rankings released on Saturday.
The team's 3.103 GPA ranks 21st among all Division I wrestling programs and fifth in the Big Ten. The Wildcats moved up two spots from 23rd a season ago. Eastern Michigan leads the list with a 3.382 team GPA.
The team grade-point average was determined using a system that includes 12 student-athletes from each program. 10 of those came from the wrestlers entered into the conference championships.
Northwestern seniors Pierce Harger and Mike McMullan were honored with spots on the NWCA All-Academic Team. The team consists of 118 Division I student-athletes and 28 of those, including McMullan, were All-Americans.
To be eligible for Academic All-American status, a student-athlete must have a 3.2 GPA, be an NCAA qualifier and have a winning percentage of at least .600 or have a 3.0 GPA and be an NCAA All-American.
The Wildcats were one of 56 programs with at least one representative on the All-Academic Team.
Northwestern wrestling also became one of just seven Big Ten teams across all sports, five of which are from NU, to receive a Public Recognition Award as part of the NCAA Academic Progress Rate program for the 10th consecutive year.
