Sophomore is first Wildcats runner to appear at national event in program's modern era
AUSTIN, Texas -- Andrea Ostenso wrapped up her season on Thursday night in the 2015 NCAA West Preliminary Championships, finishing the 10,000m event in 37:50.36. The sophomore was the first runner to represent the Wildcats at the national meet since Northwestern cross-country's debut as a program in 1998.
"We are so proud of Andi and her accomplishments this season," said head coach April Likhite. "To be the first Wildcat to represent our institution and our program is something she should be extremely proud of."
Ostenso secured her spot in the field of 48 runners with a qualifying mark of 34:46.88. The Ladysmith, Wis., native set that personal record with a memorable effort at the Stanford Invitational on April 3. That time bested her previous PR by nearly one minute and 24 seconds.
The top-12 qualifiers in each event from both the West and East Preliminary Championships (held simultaneously in Austin and Jacksonville, Fla., respectively) advance to compete at the 2015 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 10-13.
