ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A nine-run inning sank Northwestern as the Wildcats fell to Michigan in the series' rubber match at Gilpon Complex, 19-1.
Michigan went on the attack early and opened scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first against starter Reed Mason. The Wolverines opened the contest with a double down the right field line and followed up with a single through the right side to plate the first run of the game. With two outs, U-M crossed two more runs on a throwing error to claim an early 3-0 lead.
Northwestern was able to get a run across in the top of the third as a pair of base hits and a walk loaded the bases for sophomore Joe Hoscheit. A sacrifice fly from the left fielder scored Heelan and cut Michigan's lead to 3-1. The Wildcats loaded the bases once again, but sophomore RJ Watters fouled out to shortstop to end the comeback bid.
U-M posted a single tally in the third and fourth innings and used a nine-run frame in the bottom of the sixth to take a comfortable 14-1 lead. Senior Jackson Glines delivered the biggest blow in the bottom of the sixth, driving in a pair of runs with a single through the right side before sophomore Pete Hofman walked in back-to-back runs.
The Wildcats were held without a run in the final six innings and the Wolverines used another big frame to blow the game wide open. Michigan drew a pair of walks and launched a single up the middle to load the bases and extended their lead when sophomore Evan Schreiber walked in three-consecutive runs. U-M added two more with a single to right field before the inning was over.
Mason surrendered five runs on seven hits on the bump, while fanning three in five innings pitched for the loss. Freshman Richard Fordon, sophomore Pete Hofman, graduate student Nate Walker and Schreiber also saw time on the mound for NU.
Freshman Connor Lind recorded his second-consecutive multi-hit game to pace the Wildcats, while junior Zach Jones added two hits of his own. Hoscheit's RBI was his 28th of the season.
The Wildcats close out their regular-season slate with a three-game set against Big Ten newcomer Maryland, beginning Thursday, May 14, at 3 p.m. The game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
Northwestern baseball wants to wish a very Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers who have supported the Wildcats throughout the years.
