EVANSTON, Ill. - Senior pitcher Brandon Magallones tied a season-best eight strikeouts, but Northwestern dropped the opener of a three-game set against Nebraska, 4-2, on Friday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park.

Magallones went 8.0 innings and threw 130 pitches, allowing three runs on 10 hits and two walks.

The Cornhuskers jumped on the board early when senior Blake Headley scored on a single to right field after launching a one-out double down the left field line. Magallones allowed just one more hit in the second frame before retiring nine-consecutive batters.

The Wildcats finally made some noise in the fourth inning when junior Jack Mitchell triggered the takeover with a base hit to left center field. Sophomore Joe Hoscheit followed up with a single of his own and classmate Matt Hopfner drew a walk to load the bases for Chicago's Big Ten Team. Mitchell scored the Wildcats' first run of the game on a Nebraska throwing error and Hopfner crossed on a single from sophomore RJ Watters as Northwestern took control, 2-1.

The Huskers were quick to respond, tallying a pair of runs in fifth to take back the lead, 3-2. After loading the bases, senior Austin Darby lined a single right past first baseman Zach Jones to plate sophomore Ryan Boldt and classmate Wes Edrington.

The `Cats threatened in the eighth frame, posting two-straight two-out singles from Mitchell and Hoscheit. With the tying run on second, Northwestern could not capitalize on the opportunity as Hopfner struck out looking to end the inning.

Nebraska added an insurance run in the top of the ninth with an RBI single to close out game one with a 4-2 victory over Northwestern.

The Wildcats and Huskers return to action on Saturday, May 2, at 1 p.m., for game two of this weekend's series. We will be celebrating Country Day and the first 150 fans will receive a foam cowboy hat and foam finger. The game will be broadcast live on BTN Plus.

On Sunday, May 3, make your plans to join us at Rocky Miller Park as we celebrate head coach Paul Stevens and his three decades as a Northwestern coach. There will be a pregame ceremony, beginning at 12:40 p.m. to honor Coach Stevens and all that he has done for Northwestern baseball. Early arriving fans will receive a commemorative gift.
