EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the 17th straight season the Northwestern women's tennis team had its name called during the NCAA Selection Show.
The NCAA announced on Tuesday that the 26th-ranked Wildcats (15-7) will travel to Los Angeles, Calif. for a first-round matchup against No. 37 Saint Mary's (14-9). Idaho will also be in Los Angeles to play regional host and seventh seed UCLA.
The first and second rounds will be played May 8-10 at 16 regional sites around the country. The final three rounds are set for May 14-19 at the Hurd Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
Northwestern has qualified for the national tournament in every season dating back to 1999, when head coach Claire Pollard took over the program. The Wildcats have advanced to at least the Round of 16 12 times during the current stretch. NU has played in the national quarterfinals three times.
The Wildcats are led by a pair of freshmen tied for the team lead in wins. Erin Larner and Alex Chatt each won 28 matches during the season. Chatt captured 18 victories during the spring dual season. Larner won 15 and was 8-3 in her first Big Ten season while playing at No. 2 for Northwestern. Larner and Alicia Barnett have been a force in doubles play since teaming up at the No. 1 spot. The duo is ranked 39th nationally and has posted an 8-3 record.
Northwestern has nine wins this season against nationally ranked opponents.
