EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern freshman Sabrina Rabin (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) has been named the Big Ten Player and Freshman of the Week following a display of speed so impressive, she stole two more bases while you read this sentence.
Rabin led the Big Ten last week with a .769 batting average including an .800 performance (8-for-10) in a three-game series at Nebraska. She had at least two hits in all four of NU's games to bring her multi-hit game total to 17 on the season and raise her batting average over the .400 mark to .403.
Rabin also stole five bases in the Nebraska series with an NU single-game record four swipes during a 4-for-4 performance on Saturday. Those steals tied Emily Allard's school record established first in 2010 and again in 2011. Rabin leads the Big Ten in stolen bases by five with 12 total in league play.
The most impressive accomplishment, however, came Wednesday in a midweek contest at No. 25 Notre Dame. Rabin recorded two hits against the Irish and found herself standing on second base midway through the game when Andrea Filler (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) hit a fly ball to deep right. Rabin tagged on the out and raced around third all the way to the plate to score from second on the sacrifice fly. The play demonstrated why Rabin's speed is a big part of Filler leading the NCAA with eight sac flies this year.
Northwestern returns to action live on BTN at 2 p.m. CT Wednesday, April 22, in an important midweek doubleheader against Illinois at Sharon J. Drysdale Field. The game will feature a free breakfast at the ballpark -- including a build-your-own-pancake bar! -- for all Northwestern students. Students should RSVP for the free meal here!
Rabin shared this week's awards with the Illini's Carly Thomas.
