EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head coach Drew Pariano announced the promotion of volunteer assistant Conor Beebe to Assistant Coach on Thursday. A collegiate standout at Central Michigan, Beebe has worked primarily with the lighter weights during his time on the NU staff.
"Conor is simply an outstanding addition to our staff," Pariano said. "During his time with the Northwestern program, he has shown his dedication and willingness to do anything for the program."
Beebe joined the Northwestern staff as a volunteer assistant coach in October 2013 after previously serving on the coaching staff at Gardner Webb University from 2010-2012. He was a four-time NCAA qualifier for Central Michigan and won a Mid-American Conference championship in 2010. Beebe is currently third at 61 kg in the United States Senior Freestyle rankings.
"Conor can relate very well to our guys because he still competes at the highest level," Pariano said. "He has made two world team trials in the past two freestyle seasons.
"It is very difficult to find a quality light weight assistant coach, and we feel like we hit the lottery with Conor's hiring."
Beebe's area of expertise has guided Northwestern wrestlers to tremendous success. Jason Tsirtsis (149) was crowned the national champion in 2014 and is a two-time Big Ten Champion and All-American. His career record after just two seasons stands at 71-5 for a .934 winning percentage, which ranks second all-time at NU. Dominick Malone (133) has qualified for the NCAA Championships each of the last two years, while Jameson Oster (141) reached the national tournament for the first time this season. Stevan Micic placed third at the Midlands while wrestling unattached during his redshirt season.
Beebe hails from Western Springs, Ill. and currently lives in Chicago.
Former assistant Jay Borschel moved back to his hometown of Marion, Iowa to open his own wrestling club. The Wrestling Lab will cater toward building the complete wrestler in terms of technical, mental and physical approach.
Northwestern had a successful 2014-15 season with its ninth top-15 NCAA finish in the past eleven years. Jason Tsirtsis and Mike McMullan won Big Ten titles and each finished third at the NCAA Championships. Tsirtsis, McMullan and Pierce Harger all won 30 matches, while McMullan and Harger reached a career milestone with 100 career wins. The Wildcats return seven starters, an All-American and three NCAA qualifiers to go along with consecutive highly regarded recruiting classes for the 2015-16 season.
