EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Northwestern held a three-run lead into the bottom of the ninth, but Michigan State strung together four runs to defeat the `Cats in walk-off fashion on Saturday afternoon at McLane Stadium.
Junior Matt Portland started on the mound for the `Cats and pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs and nine hits with three strikeouts. Classmate Reed Mason took the loss for NU after allowing four runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings.
Fifth-year senior Kyle Ruchim paced the Wildcats' offense with two runs on three hits in five appearances at the plate.
Much like yesterday, Northwestern opened scoring in the top of the first. Ruchim kicked off the contest with a double-bagger and moved to third on a groundout. The `Cats took advantage of an MSU error to plate their first run of the game.
Northwestern started the top of the third with three singles to load the bases. Sophomore Joe Hoscheit reached base on a fielder's choice as Ruchim made his way home to extend NU's lead. Junior Zach Jones added the `Cats third run after scoring on an RBI single from sophomore Matt Hopfner before Hoscheit was sent home on a bases-loaded walk. The `Cats continued to work in the third frame when redshirt-freshman Grant Peikert singled up the middle to plate two more runs and force MSU to make a pitching change.
MSU began to chip away at the deficit after capitalizing on an NU error to jump on the board in the bottom of the third. The Spartans added another run in the next stanza, driving in a run off a sacrifice fly and came within three after crossing a run in the bottom of the sixth.
The Wildcats were held without another run for the remainder of the game as the Spartans began pulling together a dangerous rally. With a runner on first, MSU sent a double to left field before an RBI single tipped off the comeback. A pair of base hits and a double evened the score, 6-6, and Michigan State delivered a walk-off base hit to claim the win and even the series.
The Wildcats and Spartans return to action on Sunday, April 12. Sophomore Joe Schindler is slated to take the mound for Northwestern and will face off against MSU senior Mick Van Vossen. First pitch is set for 12:05 p.m., and will be broadcast live on BTN2GO.
