Wildcats Escape to Snowbird Classic This Weekend

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern will travel to Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte, Fla., this weekend for a quartet of games against three teams at the Snowbird Classic. The Wildcats begin the tournament in Punta Gorda on Friday, March 6 at South County Regional Park against Ball State at 4 p.m. CST.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will play the Dartmouth Big Green on Saturday, March 7 at 11 a.m. CST before closing the weekend with a doubleheader against the Georgetown Hoyas on Sunday, March 8. The first pitch on getaway day is slated for 9 a.m. CST. The final three games will all be played at North Charlotte Regional Park in Port Charlotte.
Northwestern will send senior Brandon Magallones out to start the game against Ball State on Friday. The right-handed hurler is searching for his first win, but he has fanned 19 batters in 15 innings in three starts thus far. Junior left-hander Matt Portland is slated to take the ball Saturday against Dartmouth. The Victor, N.Y., native has compiled a 2.50 ERA in a team-high 18 innings with 14 strikeouts and only four walks. Junior Reed Mason will open game one against the Hoyas, while sophomore Joe Schindler will make his second start of the season in the weekend finale Sunday.
The Wildcats have three players leading the way with 12 hits apiece this spring. Fifth-year senior Scott Heelan is batting a team-high .343 with four doubles and three RBI. Sophomore Joe Hoscheit is hitting .313 with three doubles, a triple and three RBI, as well. Senior Reid Hunter leads the squad with four RBI while starting all 10 games thus far.
