EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern makes its way to Sin City for a four-game series against UNLV beginning Friday, March 20, at 8:05 p.m. CST. The Wildcats and Rebels kick off a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2:05 p.m. before closing out the series on Sunday, March 22 (3:05 p.m. CST).
Senior Brandon Magallones is slated to take the mound in the series opener on Friday. The right-handed pitcher is 1-1 on the year and has registered 29 strikeouts in 28 innings pitched to rank third in the Big Ten. Junior southpaws Matt Portland (1-3) and Reed Mason (0-4) will back up Magallones on the mound in Saturday's twin bill before sophomore Joe Schindler (1-1) closes out the series on Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats head to Las Vegas fresh off a three-game series against Seattle. NU went 1-2 against the Redhawks, while fifth-year senior Kyle Ruchim led the squad with a team-best five hits.
UNLV holds an 8-3 advantage over the `Cats in the overall series as Friday marks the first meeting between the squads since 2010. NU went 1-3 against the Rebels that year with its lone-win coming on the front end of a doubleheader.
The Rebels are 9-10 so far this season and enter the weekend having lost eight of their last 11 games. Sophomore transfer D.J. Myers is projected to get the start for UNLV on Friday and junior Bryan Bonnell is scheduled to close out the series on the mound on Sunday.
The Wildcats have two players with 19 hits apiece so far this spring in sophomore Joe Hoscheit, who has started every game this year, and fifth-year senior Scott Heelan. Ruchim is batting a team-best .340 with six RBI and four doubles.
