BELLEVUE, Wash. -- After opening the four-game series with a four-run victory on Thursday night, Northwestern dropped both games of a doubleheader at Seattle University Friday, 6-1 (7) and 3-2.
Fifth-year senior Kyle Ruchim collected a team-high three hits, while three different players drove in runs for the Wildcats.
Game One Recap:
The first game had all the makings of a classic pitcher's duel. NU starting pitcher Matt Portland allowed a leadoff hits in the first and second innings, but the left-hander did not surrender a run through four innings.
On the other side, SU's Skyler Genger was sharp as well. He retired the Wildcats in order the first time through the lineup with six strikeouts before Ruchim broke up the perfect game with an infield single to the hole at shortstop. He moved up to second base on a groundout off the bat of Zach Jones, but the 'Cats couldn't bring him home and the game remained scoreless.
The Redhawks finally began to rattle Portland in the bottom of the fifth inning. Dalton Hurd led off the frame with a base hit up the middle and he eventually stole second with one out. He would score on an RBI single from Griffin Andreychuk and before it was all said and done, Seattle plated six runs on six hits in the inning.
Freshman Justin Yoss tossed a scoreless sixth with two punchouts to turn it back over the offense. Sophomore Joe Hoscheit did his best to dig into the deficit when he deposited his first home run of the season over the left-field wall to begin the top of the seventh. Genger settled down and retired the next three 'Cats in order to nail down the seven-inning complete-game victory.
Genger scattered three hits over seven innings with 11 strikeouts and one walk. In addition to Ruchim and Hoscheit, Cody Stevens had the third hit for NU, bunt single in the top of the fifth.
Game Two Recap:
In the second game, a nine-inning affair, Ruchim opened the festivities with a single to center field, but he was soon erased on a 4-6-3 double play. Scott Heelan notched a two-out single and Hoscheit walked, but designated hitter Jack Mitchell popped out to end the early threat.
Andreychuk set up Seattle's first run in the bottom of the inning when he legged out a double to left-center field. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sheldon Stober.
Northwestern starter Reed Mason and his counterpart from the Redhawks, Ky Dye, posted zeroes in the second and third stanzas before the home team scratched out another run in the bottom of the fourth. Stober scored the second run after leading off with a single to left field, and eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly from Brian Olson to give his team a 2-0 lead.
Northwestern was able to answer and produce a pair of tallies in the top of the fifth. Freshman JR Reimer and redshirt freshman Grant Peikert opened the inning with back-to-back singles before Ruchim stepped up a drove a base hit into right-center field to plate Reimer from second and cut the deficit in half. Peikert scampered to third on Ruchim's second hit of the day and he came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Zach Jones.
Mason avoided any damage in the bottom of the fifth, but he ran into trouble at the onset of the bottom of the sixth. Stober tripled to right-center field to begin the frame and he scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a base hit by Grant Newton.
After Seattle took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, NU managed just one more hit the rest of the way when Heelan doubled with two outs in the top of the eighth.
The series finale has been moved up one hour to 1 p.m. CT because of rain in the forecast for Saturday. Sophomore Joe Schindler is slated to make his third start of the season for Northwestern. The right-hander is 1-1 with 17 strikeouts and only one walk in 12.2 innings of work in four appearances this season.
