SEATTLE -- Northwestern pounded out 12 hits and got another powerful pitching performance on the mound as it opened a four-game set against the Seattle Redhawks Thursday night with a 6-2 victory.
Senior Brandon Magallones was brilliant on the bump for the Wildcats in his fifth start of the season. The right-hander scattered six hits and allowed only two runs with four strikeouts over seven innings. The Manhattan, Ill., native secured his first win of the season against Seattle Thursday night.
Offensively, five different players posted multi-hit efforts with redshirt freshman shortstop Grant Peikert driving in a pair of runs.
Northwestern's offense struck for a pair of runs right away in the top of the first inning. Kyle Ruchim crushed a lead-off double to start the game and Scott Heelan followed with a two-bagger of his own to drive home Ruchim for the first run. Heelan scored the second run when he came on a fielder's choice off the bat Joe Hoscheit.
Magallones faced the minimum in the bottom of the first and his offense went into attack mode once again in the top of the second. This time second baseman Cody Stevens uncorked a double and he eventually tagged up and took third when Connor Lind flied out to right field. Peikert singled to drive Stevens home, and after stealing second base and moving to third on a single by Ruchim, the infielder scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Reid Hunter.
The third and fourth innings were scoreless for both teams before the Wildcats posted another two-spot on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. Matt Hopfner laced a lead-off single and he took second on a passed ball. JR Reimer walked ahead of Stevens who singled to load the bases for Lind. A wild pitch allowed Hopfner to score and make it a 5-0 lead, and later, Peikert notched a sacrifice fly to left field that brought Reimer home.
The Redhawks scored their first run of the night on a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth and another after a triple and a single that led off the home half of the seventh.
Magallones was finished after seven solid innings and Pete Hofman and Jake Stolley teamed up to turn in two scoreless innings to nail down the fourth victory of the season for the Wildcats.
The four-game series continues Friday with a doubleheader at Bannerwood Park. Junior Matt Portland will take the ball in the first game, which is scheduled for a 4 p.m. CT first pitch. The opener is slated to be a seven-inning game. Portland's classmate Reed Mason will get the nod in the nightcap for the Wildcats. Game two will begin approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
