EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Big Ten on Monday recognized a trio of Wildcats as the league's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week as well as Freshman of the Week for their contributions in Northwestern's season-opening victory over USC.
Senior attacker Kara Mupo claimed offensive honors, sophomore Sheila Nesselbush garnered the defensive accolade and Selena Lasota was named the conference's Freshman of the Week.
Mupo matched a career high with five goals, including the game-tying goal with 37 seconds left in regulation to help the Wildcats complete a comeback and earn the overtime victory 12-11. Trailing 7-0, Mupo scored the 'Cats first goal of the season to spark the comeback and converted on each of her two free position opportunities in the contest. With her five goals, Mupo surpassed the 100-goal plateau for her career and now has 103 total.
Nesselbush was instrumental in Northwestern erasing a 7-0 deficit and completing a comeback, leading the 'Cats with a pair of caused turnovers while grabbing a pair of ground balls in the contest. Her play on the defensive end helped the 'Cats hold USC scoreless over the final 9:35 of regulation and all of overtime.
Lasota lived up to the preseason hyped that surrounded her, scoring four goals, including the game winner in overtime, and dishing out a pair of assists to lead Northwestern with six points. Lasota's game winning goal came just 57 seconds into the overtime period, helping NU complete the comeback. She recorded a goal and an assist in the first half, before a pair of goals and an assist in the second half helped send the game to overtime.
Northwestern is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 14 when it travels to Atlanta, Ga., to take on No. 6 Virginia at the Cobb County Classic. The game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT.
