EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 26 Northwestern completed a winning weekend on Sunday with a 6-1 victory over Valparaiso. With the win, the 'Cats improve to 6-4 on the season.

Doubles play proved a competitive event. Sam Shropshire and Alex Pasareanu defeated their Valpo opponents 6-3 at No. 2, but Fedor Baev and Strong Kirchheimer fell 6-4 at No. 1 to force the third match to completion.

At No. 3, Alp Horoz and Mihir Kumar were down 5-2 when the previous contest finished. However, the resilient 'Cats dug in their heels and won five straight games to win 7-5 and put NU up 1-0.

The Wildcats continued the momentum into singles. No. 108 Kirchheimer prevailed 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 over Jeffrey Schorsch, and Logan Staggs followed quickly after with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Charlie Emhardt at No. 3.

Kumar locked the Wildcat win at No. 4, where he bested Garrett Gardner 6-3, 6-0. With the match decided, the rest of the contests finished out.

At No. 5, Baev topped Lucas Waak 6-3, 6-4 to give NU its fifth point. Shropshire then outlasted Dave Bacalla at No. 1 and triumph 7-5, 6-4.

To finish, Kyle Dunn defeated Baev 7-5, 6-3 at No. 6 to round out the final score of 6-1.

Northwestern has a rest next weekend before returning to the road. The 'Cats open Big Ten play at in-state rival Illinois at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20. They then travel to Ithaca, N.Y. the following Sunday for a 10 a.m. match against Cornell.
