EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's tennis team returns home to the Combe Tennis Center this weekend to face a pair of top teams from the Lone Star State. The Wildcats take on No. 6 Baylor on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. and then play No. 35 Texas Sunday at 11 a.m.
The first 75 students in attendance at Friday's match vs. Baylor will receive a free Northwestern tennis t-shirt.
Northwestern was last in action on Feb. 15 when it beat Purdue, 4-3, in Evanston. The `Cats were scheduled to play No. 12 Vanderbilt last weekend, but the match was postponed due to inclement weather.
Freshman Alex Chatt is off to a blistering start in the 2015 campaign. The newcomer has won all 10 sets she has played in dual matches to jump out to a 5-0 mark. Four of those wins have come in the fifth singles spot. Chatt moved up to the No. 4 position against Purdue and had little trouble disposing of Andjela Djokovic, helping Northwestern to the close win.
NU leads the all-time series with Texas by a 10-6 margin. Northwestern won a 5-2 decision last season in Austin. The Wildcats and Baylor have split their eight matchups. Northwestern beat the Bears the last time they were in Evanston by a 4-1 score.
Baylor is off to a 10-2 start in 2015. The Bears boast four wins over top-25 teams, including two over opponents in the top-10. After starting the season 10-0, the team has lost consecutive matches at Michigan and Vanderbilt.
The Bears have five nationally ranked singles players on their squad. They are led by No. 23 Ema Burgic, who is 7-2 at the first singles spot. Blair Shankle has put together a 5-1 mark between the second and third positions and is ranked 37th. Leolia JeanJean (No. 88), Rachael James-Baker (No. 92) and Kiah Generette (No. 125) round out the poll for Baylor. Burgic and Shankle team up on the 13th-ranked doubles tandem and have a 5-2 record at the first spot.
The Longhorns also come to Evanston in the midst of a two-match losing streak. Texas dropped decisions to Pepperdine and USC two weeks ago. The 2-3 Longhorns head to Ann Arbor, Mich. to take on the Wolverines on Friday before coming to Evanston on Sunday. Breaunna Addison leads the Longhorns at the No. 1 singles position and is ranked 47th. Addison teams up with Ryann Foster on the 27th-ranked doubles team.
The Wildcats return to Big Ten action on March 6 when they travel to Columbus, Ohio for a showdown with Ohio State.
