SAN ANTONIO -- Northwestern freshman JR Reimer drove in two runs Saturday, but the Wildcats fell to Notre Dame at the Irish Alamo Invitational in San Antonio, 7-3.
The 'Cats scored first in the top of the second inning. Joe Hoscheit walked with one out and moved over to third base on a single off the bat of Luke Dauch. Hoscheit came home when the next batter, Reimer reached on a fielder's choice.
Notre Dame countered with three runs in its half of the second inning. Three consecutive singles kicked off the innings to lead to the first run. The second run came in courtesy of a Northwestern throwing error before the third crossed the plate on an RBI groundout.
Chicago's Big Ten Team would not be deterred, however, and it posted a crooked number in the visitors' half of the third. Zach Jones drew a one-out walk and he scampered to third on a base hit by Reid Hunter. Hoscheit singled to drive in Jones ahead of Reimer, who launched an RBI double to left-center field. Hunter scored to even the game at three runs apiece.
NU's starter Matt Portland mowed the Irish down in the third, but they added one more in the bottom of the fourth. NU was not able to sustain any scoring rallies and Notre Dame posted a trio of runs on four hits against Tommy Bordignon out of the bullpen to account for the game's final margin, 7-3.
The Wildcats will play in the consolation game of the Irish Alamo Invitational. They will play either Villanova or Incarnate Word at UIW's Sullivan Field beginning at 11 a.m.
