Northwestern Falls Short Against No. 4 Duke

DURHAM, N.C. - Northwestern picked up singles wins from Alex Chatt and Lok Sze Leung but ultimately came up shy of an upset of the fourth-ranked Duke Blue Devils in Durham.
The freshman Chatt cruised to a win over Duke's Alyssa Smith at No. 5. Chatt dominated the first set to the tune of a 6-2 win before winning the second, 6-3 to pick up the `Cats first point of the afternoon.
Leung fell behind early with a loss in the first set but battled back to take the match with wins in the second and third sets. Leung was a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 winner.
Erin Larner received a promotion to the second singles spot after winning Big Ten Player of the Week last week. She faced a nationally ranked foe in No. 87 Ester Goldfeld and suffered her first loss of the season.
The Blue Devils lived up to their national billing in doubles play. They won in positions No. 1 and No. 3 to claim the first point of the match. The Northwestern freshman duo of Chatt and Rheeya Doshi put up a fight against Duke's tandem of Samantha Harris and Annie Mulholland, but the Blue Devil team prevailed 6-4 to clinch the point.
The Wildcats have a lengthy break before they return home to begin conference play against Penn State on Saturday, Feb. 14. The match will take place inside the Combe Tennis Center beginning at 11 a.m.
