#B1GCats Historical Season Ends with Loss to West Virginia

11/20/2015 6:52:00 PM | Women's Soccer

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. -- After a historical season that saw the program's best run since 1998, Northwestern's (14-6-2) 2015 campaign came to an end after a 4-0 loss to second-seeded West Virginia (18-2-1) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

"Credit to West Virginia. I thought they were a fantastic team," said head coach Michael Moynihan. The amount of athleticism and quality of technical ability was extremely impressive – probably the best we have seen all year. We wish them the best of luck moving forward."

The Mountaineers opened scoring in the 15th minute of action with a header off WVU's second corner kick. The ball bounced around inside the area before Amanda Hill found her fifth goal of the year. Before the 'Cats could get another look on goal, WVU ripped another shot to the far right post from 25 yards out to go ahead in the 23rd minute, 2-0.

Two minutes later, the Mountaineers tallied their third goal of the day. The play started with a free kick at the top of the box as Kadeisha Buchanan found Leah Emaus who put a low shot to the far left post.

WVU was able to add one more goal before the end of the half and entered the break with a 4-0 lead.

Northwestern's best chance of the half came in the 43rd minute when junior Addie Steiner made a diving shot right of the penalty line, but Hannah Steadman logged her first save of the night.

In the second half, Chicago's Big Ten Team nearly hopped on the board when fifth-year senior Niki Sebo nailed a point-blank shot from top of the area. West Virginia's defense came up with the block to preserve its 15th shutout of the year.

The Mountaineers advance to the Round of 16 and will host Loyola Marymount on Sunday.

Northwestern has punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1998, and the third time in program history. Their second-round run marked just the second time the 'Cats advanced past the round of 64.

"We have been growing over the past few years," Moynihan said. "Our senior class has shown so much character, and built the road map for the younger girls moving forward. We have shown so much resilience and a tremendous work ethic, and our expectations have risen tremendously."

Northwestern went 13-5-2 during the regular-season with seven Big Ten victories – the most since 1998 – and appeared in the NSCAA polls for the first time in 17 years. Northwestern did not lose a single match against a team ranked outside the RPI top 45 (based on the most current RPI data).

The #B1GCats tournament bid was bolstered by the stalwart play between the pipes. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Clem and the Wildcats' young defense posted a program-best 12 shutouts as well as a goals-against-average of just .530, which ranked among the NCAA's top 10.

"I can't put into words how special this season was," said senior Nandi Mehta. "I love every single one of these girls. The bar has been set and this program has some big things ahead of it."
