'Cats Fall Short to Wolverines in B1G Quarterfinals

11/1/2015 2:35:00 PM | Women's Soccer

By Amit Mallik, Northwestern Correspondent

NORTHFIELD, Ill. – Nicky Waldeck's goal just after halftime proved to be the difference maker for the Wolverines in the Big Ten quarterfinal at New Trier High School on Sunday afternoon as Northwestern (12-5-2, 6-4-1 B1G) fell to Michigan (12-6-2, 7-3-2 B1G) in a 1-0 loss.

In an extremely heated and physical encounter, the Wildcats fell behind in the 49th minute and could not find an equalizer despite mounting an impressive comeback attempt late in the second half.

Northwestern had the first shot of the game after 20 minutes of play as senior Jennifer Korn headed a cross from junior Addie Steiner just wide of the far post.  Steiner was released into space down the left wing with a nice pass from sophomore Michelle Manning.

On a Michigan corner kick two minutes later, Christina Murillo delivered a cross to the far post where Melissa Kreutz had an unmarked header that sailed over the bar.

The Wolverines took the lead through Waldeck after Christina Ordonez sent a through ball into the left side of the box. Waldeck latched onto the pass behind the defensive line and fired in a left footed finish that bounced off of Northwestern goalkeeper Lauren Clem.

Michigan almost doubled its lead twice in the first 15 minutes after the goal as U-M tried to kill off the game, but the Wolverines could not break the 'Cats backline.

In the last twenty minutes of the game, the Wildcats ramped up the pressure on the Michigan defense as they searched for an equalizer. The game grew intense and frantic as Michigan picked up three yellow cards, while Northwestern earned one.

In the 70th minute, junior Rachel Zampa swung in a Northwestern free kick from around 40 yards out that found freshman Hannah Davidson at the far post. Davidson rose in the air to meet the ball but headed into the outside netting in Northwestern's best chance of the second half.

The Wildcats had a few more chances towards the end of the game, including two penalty kick appeals in the last 15 minutes. Steiner had a shot on goal from the top of the box with 10 minutes to go, but Michigan goalkeeper Megan Hinz was there to make her fifth save of the match.

Michigan will advance to the semifinals of the Big Ten tournament, while Northwestern will wait to see if it earns and at-large bid in the 64-team field of the NCAA tournament. The NCAA DI Women's Soccer Selection Show is slated for Monday, Nov. 9, at 3:30 p.m. CST.
