EVANSTON, Ill. – Wildcats junior Kacie Komoto has been selected as the Big Ten Golfer of the Week, the Conference announced on Wednesday. Komoto led Northwestern to a share of the Windy City Collegiate Classic Championship at Westmoreland Country Club earlier this week.
Komoto set the pace for the Wildcats in Tuesday's final round of Windy City competition with birdies on three of her first six holes, and two of her final five on a scorecard that was bogey-free. The junior's 5-under 67 in round three vaulted her 20 spots up the leaderboard to finish tied for fourth. Her 211 is the fourth-best 54-hole tournament score in Wildcats history, and comes just two weeks after teammate Stephanie Lau set a program record by firing a 207 at the Mason Rudolph.
Northwestern led the field with 192 pars and the 852 team score in the 5-count-4 format is the second-best mark in program history for a 54-hole event. The 'Cats established a program record (849) two weeks ago at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Nashville, breaking the previous mark of 853 established at the 2014 Stanford Intercollegiate.
Komoto is the third different Wildcat to be honored as the Big Ten Golfer of the Week this season, with one coming after each of Northwestern's three tournaments this fall. Sophomore Sarah Cho earned the award after winning the season-opening Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, while Lau, a freshman, took home the honor after her record-setting performance in Tennessee.
The Wildcats will have a weekend away from competition before traveling west to the 2015 Stanford Intercollegiate Oct. 18-20. At last year's Stanford Intercollegiate Northwestern established a program scoring record (since broken) of 853.
