Rooney wins twice in singles play for Northwestern

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Junior Jillian Rooney posted a pair of wins in singles competition, highlighting Northwestern players in action on the first day of competition at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic hosted by the University of Alabama.

Rooney was victorious over Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer of Georgia Tech in her first match of the day, winning 6-4, 6-3 before coming back to defeat Nina Khmelnitckaia of Kansas 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 later on in the day. The Wildcats also got a victory in singles action from Brook Rischbieth who defeated Laura Hopton of Kennesaw State 6-4, 6-0.

In the only round of doubles competition on Friday, Northwestern got a win from the team of Lee Or and Erin Larner who topped the Chattanooga squad of Kayla Jones and Kelsey Coots 8-4.

Competition continues Saturday in Tuscaloosa beginning at 8 a.m. with the final round of singles play followed by two rounds of doubles action.
