Redshirt sophomore wins twice Monday

ANN ARBOR, Mich. --
Northwestern redshirt sophomore Maddie Lipp earned a pair of singles wins on Monday to advance to Tuesday's championship match at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by the University of Michigan.

Lipp, the No. 2 seed in the draw, is aiming for Northwestern's 11th singles title in the event since 1999 and the first since Kate Turvy was victorious in 2012.

Michigan freshman Brienne Minor, a No. 5-8 seed, will be Lipp's opponent in the championship match which is set for 9 a.m. Central time.

The Wildcat needed three sets each to win her quarterfinal and semifinal round matches on Monday. In her opening match of the day, Lipp defeated 9-12 seed Kate Fahey of Michigan 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. With a spot in the title match on the line, Lipp battled back from a set down to knock off 5-8 seed Lauren Chyphya of Wisconsin, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Northwestern sophomore Erin Larner saw her tournament run end in Monday morning's quarterfinal round as she was edged by fourth-seeded Yuliya Shupenia of DePaul 6-3, 6-4.
