Sebo and Steiner net goals for Wildcats
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Co-captain Niki Sebo and junior Addie Steiner registered goals on Saturday night at Illinois Soccer Stadium as Northwestern (12-4-2, 6-3-1 B1G) tallied its 11th shutout of the year with a 2-0 win over Illinois (9-5-3, 3-4-3 B1G).
"It was a great night for us," said head coach Michael Moynihan. "We were up 1-0 at the half and not playing very well to be honest. Addie [Steiner] had a great goal off a serve from Jennifer Korn. In the second half, we played much more assertively and started to create good chances. Niki Sebo hit a fantastic shot to increase the lead, and then Lauren Clem came up with a huge save on a penalty kick late in the game. Overall, it was a great result on the road."
Clem notched another clean sheet and tied a season-best seven saves in the Wildcats' effort.
Illinois edged Northwestern in shots, 17-12, but it was the Wildcats who capitalized on opportunity.
Steiner was the first to strike to put Northwestern on the board as the junior took advantage of a one-on-one opportunity with Illini keeper Claire Wheatly in the 26th minute. Sebo added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute, good for her fifth goal of the year.
The Illini nearly cut their deficit in half when they drew a penalty kick in the 78th minute, but Jannelle Flaws' shot was denied by Clem to preserve the shutout.
Chicago's Big Ten Team closes out its regular-season schedule against Wisconsin on Oct. 28. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., in Madison, Wisconsin. With Wisconsin's 1-0 win over Maryland on Saturday, the Badgers clinched at least a share of the Big Ten Women's Soccer Championship.
