EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern freshman Erin Larner has been recognized as the Big Ten Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the first time, the conference announced Tuesday.
The Portland, Ore. native had a big weekend during the ITA Kick-Off, beginning her Northwestern career with a 2-0 mark in dual matches and picking up her first win over a nationally ranked opponent.
Larner allowed only four points in two matches and posted shutouts in two singles sets during the Wildcats' matches against No. 32 Arizona State and No. 21 Rice. She opened Saturday at No. 4 singles and posted a dominant win over 62nd-ranked Ebony Panoho of Arizona State, 6-3, 6-0 for the 'Cats first singles point of the match.
Her impressive Saturday performance against Panoho prompted a promotion to the third singles spot, where she proved herself worthy and surrendered just one point in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Rice's Liat Zimmerman. Larner also helped the Wildcats pick up a big win over Rice by teaming up with Lok Sze Leung at the second doubles spot for a 6-2 victory.
“It was definitely a confidence booster getting out there and having my first couple matches go my way,” Larner said. “I'm just trying to keep my momentum going.”
Northwestern will try to keep its momentum going when it travels to Durham, N.C. to take on the fourth-ranked Duke Blue Devils on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 10 a.m.
