EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern sprinter Mary Warren (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after helping set a Norris Aquatics Center pool record and swimming an unrested career-best NCAA `B' cut time in the 50 free during last week's NU win over Milwaukee.
Warren swam very few yards during the Wildcats' 13-event Senior Day win over the Panthers, but she made them count. Her sole individual race came in the 50 freestyle, which she won with a solid 23.22 before amping up and letting loose in the 200 free relay.
Warren led off that relay with a career-best-tying and NCAA `B' provisional qualifying 22.87 50 free split, this one during the meat of pre-Championships training after she swam the same time in a much more rested state at the TYR Invitational in November. The effort set the tone for a pool record that broke the old mark by a full six-tenths of a second.
Warren and the Wildcats return to action at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at Iowa.
