'Cats Win Four Over Ranked Opponents

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Northwestern won eight singles matches and took two in doubles on the first day of the Mal Moore Invitational on the campus of the University of Alabama.

The round-robin style event saw the 17th-ranked `Cats matched up against players from No. 18 Georgia Tech.

Friday's action started with doubles, and Northwestern picked up a couple convincing victories. Alicia Barnett and Manon Peri were up 4-0 on Kendal Woodard and Megan Kurey when the Yellow Jacket duo was forced to retire due to injury. Alex Chatt and Brooke Rischbieth were also winners with a 6-0 shutout of the 28th-ranked Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer and Alexis Prokopuik.

The Wildcats were dominant in singles play on the event's first day, picking up three wins versus ranked opponents. NU took eight of nine matches and won six of them in straight sets.

Sophomore Jillian Rooney was a 6-2, 7-5 (4) victor over No. 81 Natasha Prokhnevska. Erin Larner, a freshman, followed suit with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Rasheeda McAdoo. The Wildcats' lone senior Lok Sze Leung also picked up a win over Georgia Tech's Kendal Woodard.

Rischbieth and Manon Peri were victors on Friday as well. Rischbieth took a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Anton-Ohlmeyer, and Peri was a 7-5, 6-4 winner over Alabama's Aryn Greene.

Barnett dropped the first set, 4-6, to No. 63 Johnise Renaud but came back to dominant in the next two sets, winning the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Chatt joined Barnett in winning a three-set match, taking down No. 121 Paige Hourigan, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Northwestern will match up against players from host Alabama on Saturday.
